North Carolina Window Tint LAWS
Nobody wants to get a ticket over their tint, so here's what actually matters in North Carolina before you get your windows done:
- Front side windows have to let at least 35% of light through, no matter what you drive. Sedans and passenger cars need that same 35% on the rear side windows and back glass.
- SUVs, vans, and other multi-purpose vehicles can usually go darker on those rear windows.
- Windshields only get a non-reflective strip up top, either down to the AS-1 line or five inches, whichever covers more. Tint can't be red, yellow, or amber, and it can't be mirrored or overly reflective.
As of December 2025, tint stopped being part of your annual state inspection. That doesn't mean the rules went away though. The darkness limits still apply, and now you're also required to roll your window down if an officer walks up during a stop.
If you have a medical condition that requires darker tint, you can apply for an exemption through the NCDMV with your doctor's signature.

Auto Window Tint FAQ
1. How long does window tint take to cure?
Curing time depends on the film you choose and the weather, with most tint needing several days to fully bond to the glass. In cooler months, that process can take a couple of weeks, so we'll let you know what to expect before you leave the shop.
2. Can I roll my windows down right after tinting?
We recommend keeping your windows up for at least a few days after installation to give the film time to set. Rolling them down too soon can shift the edges of the film and lead to peeling or bubbling later on.
3. Why Does Car Window Tint Fade?
Car window tint fades when the materials inside the film begin to break down under sunlight, heat, and everyday environmental exposure. UV radiation is the biggest contributor.
There's an irony built into how window film works. The film is designed to block UV rays and protect your vehicle's interior — which means it absorbs that solar energy itself, every day it's on the glass. A film's ability to keep its color while doing that job is what separates a quality product from a cheap one.
Film quality is the deciding factor. Lower-quality dyed films depend on colorants that degrade unevenly, and that's what produces the familiar purple window. The yellow pigments in cheap dyes break down faster than the blue and red pigments do — as the yellow disappears, what's left reads as purple.
Higher-quality films avoid this in two ways. They're built with UV-blocking polyester, which protects the film's own structure rather than just the cabin behind it. And they use color-stable dyes, engineered so every pigment fades at the same slow rate. When all colors change together and slowly, the film stays the color you chose instead of drifting toward purple.
4. How do I clean my tinted windows?
We recommend a soft microfiber cloth and an ammonia-free glass cleaner made for tinted windows. Ammonia-based products can break down the film over time, so avoiding them helps your tint stay clear and bubble-free longer.
5. Do bubbles in window tint go away?
Water bubbles that appear immediately after installation usually clear within a few days to two weeks as the film cures. Air bubbles appearing months or years later are adhesive failure and will not resolve on their own.
6. Why does window tint turn purple?
Cheap dyed films use pigment blends in which the yellow pigment breaks down faster than the blue and red. As the yellow fades, the remaining pigments read as purple. Films made with color-stable dyes fade evenly and slowly, so they don't shift color this way.
